Abbey of Pannonhalma, the cradle of Hungarian wine

TOUR STARTS ON REQUEST | Full day tour | Outstanding universal value. | The document of foundations was issued to the Pannonhalma Benedictine Monastery by King Stephen, first king of Hungary more than thousand years ago. Through the centuries, the life of the monks was closely connected with grapes and wine. The first Benedictine monks founded the country's first school and in 1055, they wrote the first document in Hungarian language. The 1,000-year history can be seen in the succession of architectural styles of the monastic buildings (the oldest dating from 1224). It is still today house a school and the monastic community. The Millenary Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma and its Natural Environment is part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1996. We visit the Abbey with the amazing library, have a wine tasting in the underground cellar, learn about herbs and have lunch in the stylish Viator Restaurant.

PROGRAMME

Enjoy an inclusive, intimate tour of the Pannonhalma wine region, in north-western Hungary. This is the place where Hungarian wines were born. Wine is made here since the establishment of the monastery, in 996. Moderately cold winters and warm summers with lots of sunshine characterises the wine region. It is famous for its’ fragrant white wines, mostly from Olaszrizling, Sauvignon Blanc and Tramini.

In addition to the fresh, fruity white wines Pinot Noir and some Bordeaux blends are also made here. Taste some varietal wines and their excellent blends in the cellars and enjoy delicious Hungarian cuisine in the stylish Viator Restaurant. Visit the Benedictine Abbey and relax in the idyllic herbal garden of the Monastery.

Return to Budapest in the evening.
