PROGRAMME

Day 1. | We leave Budapest and head south to Szekszárd early in the morning. One of the region's best winemaker is expecting us at his amazing cellar for tasting and discussing the important things of life. He and his family proudly cherish the winemaking heritage of the region. They are devoted to make wines of outstanding and only outstanding quality. Proving the appreciation of the consumers and wine professionals he was awarded with the precious “Winemaker of the Year” price in the past decade. We are going to taste Kékfrankos and Kadarka and some of their single vineyard selection. Lunch will be offered at an attractive local restaurant, offering authentic local food. After trying the Hungarian cuisine we take our GAZ cars (a four wheel drive Soviet military vehicle) for a vineyard tour. We stop for a short break and visit a small scale wine producer. Later in the afternoon we check-in at our inn, have a little time for relaxation before the evening wine tasting and dinner. The winemaker family has cultivated wines since the 1700 years. Their distinctive house style is: dark coloured, full bodied red wines with relatively high tannins and rich spicy aromas. They are one of the most emblematic family run wineries of Hungary, appreciated internationally as well.

Day 2. | After breakfast we make our way to a small village and visit a cooper manufacturer to learn about barrel making. We admire the enchanting landscape on the way to our next stop and around Antinori’s Tűzkő Wine Estate. However Szekszárd region is more famous for its red wines we start our exploration with white ones. We stroll in the cellar, taste 5 selected wines and have stew for lunch which is made in the kettle in open air. Retouring to Szekszárd the sweet-toothed guests may visit the Mézeskalács (Gingerbread) Shop, others can educate their sense of smell in wine in a museum or simply have a coffee. We return to our hotel later in the afternoon where from we need to make a tiny “walking tour” to visit a fascinating cellar and have a tasting of selected Hungarian dishes.

Day 3. | The third day will be dedicated to history and culture. We travel further south to one of Hungary’s most stunning city. The 2000 years old Pécs is one of the richest places in terms of historic sites and monuments. It is the intellectual, cultural (European Capital of Culture in 2010) and administrative centre of the region. Strolling in the streets we are attracted by the cultural cuvee and the numerous spots of history. The sightseeing tour will include the visit of the building of the first Hungarian University, the Mosque, the Cathedral and more. We finish our tour in the 150 years old champagne cellar. We visit the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter after lunch. Several art exhibitions can be visited on sight, we are going to pick one. We take our bus after a relaxing coffee break and head to Villány. We check-in, get freshened up then meet downstairs for an amazing visit to our next cellar. The “Chapel” is one of the most impressive cellars of Villány. If we are lucky enough, the winemaker himself guides us in his underground world. The visit of the circular cellar is an exceptional experience. Dinner with a selection of wines is served at its restaurant afterwards.

Day 4. | Please take it easy for today, wear comfortable shoes and cloths. After breakfast we will hike to the Statue Park. The unique formation was a stone-mine of Szársomlyó’s hill earlier. Free sculpturing was allowed here for the first time.  Almost 200 sculptors were working here since its establishment. We leave to Kisharsány for our first tasting, to a prestigious winery of the area. Choosing their name was determined by their commitment to the region and respect for traditions. The name ”Vylyan“ was used for “Villány“ in the 15th Century manuscript. And the manner in which it was written, using a quill pen, served as inspiration for the form of their logo. Not only can the perfect wines be put down to the winery but also cultural programmes are inspired by it, among which there is the ”Művészi Hordók” (Art Barrels) project organised by the winery itself. We taste selected assortment with cold bites. Walking downhill from the Kisharsány’s hill we visit a lovely cellar-row village. We have a dinner in Villány at the outstanding wine estate. The history of the winery goes back 7 generations, prized many times in international challenges such as Decanter, Vinitaly etc. Vineyard-selected wines and the terroir are playing important part of the winery. Their upmost brand is Kopár named after a top vineyard of the region.

Day 5. | We check out from our hotel and leave to Siklós where we visit Malkocoglu Bali-bey mosque, a relic of the subjection of the Ottoman Empire. Later in the village of Máriagyűd we are enjoying a gourmet chocolate tasting, escorted by premium wines. After the handcrafted chocolates we visit a very unique cellar. They focus is on balanced, complex reds, particularly Cabernet Francs. The terroir approach is the most important feature for them. He also is an extremely experienced and devoted winemaker, a real icon of the region. The uniqueness in his winemaking style is that he expertly combines the novel techniques of winemaking with traditional methods. His emphasis lies clearly on allowing the terroir in which the grapes are grown, to be expressed through his wines: a classic example of those that are purely made in the vineyards. We will have the chance to visit his vinyards and taste 5-6 wines and have a lunch in his vineyard. After lunch we leave to Budapest in the afternoon.
